A total of 10 schools from Mombasa, Aga Khan Primary, Tudor Day Primary, Makande Primary, Ronald Ngala Primary, Ziwani Primary, Fahari Primary, Arya Primary, Serani Primary, Makupa Primary and Mvita Primary took part.
After a day of intense competition amongst top ten state and private schools from the Coastal city, Ziwani Primary School emerged champions after beating Arya Primary by 6 wickets in a thrill packed match at the Burhani Sports Club’s newly laid all-weather astro-turf in Coast Primary School Tournament 2012.
Ziwani ceased the initiative to take the next step towards the title by outsmarting opponent’s Arya against all odds. As they say, anything is possible in a game of cricket and a thrilling finish is what the public and private schools experienced on Saturday.
Ziwani won the toss and chose to field on a hot day and the decision paid off. Arya put on a decent 40 runs in their 10 overs with a superb 13 runs from Jagesh Solanki. Hussein Salim claimed 2/5 for Ziwani.
Ziwani in response were cruising at 10/0 until the introduction of Manish Vekaria who claimed 2 vital wickets in successive deliveries. With two deliveries to go in the innings and match still in the balance with the score tied at 40, Ayub Mohdy finished the job at hand for Ziwani with a cover drive to the boundary, winning the match for his team and also getting to his unbeaten 20 runs in the process. What an exciting finish!
Manesh finished with 2/8 and J.Takram 1/13. Arya was the hot favourite before the start of play. They fielded well and bowled well. But as everyone appreciates, luck plays a part in such close finishes. The event witnessed several brilliant individual performances, most notably from the crowned champions who scooped both the bowling and batting awards on top of lifting the esteemed trophy. The best batsman award went to A. Mohdy who registered 42 runs off 3 innings and Hussein Salim’s effort of 8/21 in 6 overs earned the youngster the accolade of being crowned the best bowler in public institutions at the Coast. Government school players got a first-hand experience on Astro-turf. They were delighted to play on it.
