Tanzania Women stun Kenya on second day

Tanzania women upset the formbook to go top of the Africa Cup by beating arch-rivals Kenya by 9 runs at the Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala, Uganda yesterday.

Tanzania won the spin of the coin and chose to bat and stayed on top of their opponents for much of the game. Opening batter Monica Pascal piled on 56 runs as Kenya looked ordinary in the field and was ably assisted in the middle of the innings by Mwanaiddi Ibrahim, Hadija Hassan and Hawa Salum as they registered 109 runs after 20 overs.

She rode her luck when Beryl Oyugi spilled her on 20, she however continued with the onslaught and tore apart the bowling on offer.

In reply, Kenya got off to the worst possible start losing 3 wickets for 17 runs but Margaret Banja’s fire-fighting effort of 46 and Sarah Bakhita’s explosive 20 got Kenya near the target but they fell nine runs short to hand the Tanzania’s a first win over Kenya since 2007.

Kenya plays debutants Sierra Leone at the Lugogo Oval on Sunday.
