Women side wallop champs in opener
Kenya Women cricket team started their campaign of the Africa Championships title with a 93 runs win over defending champions Tanzania at Sir Ali Muslim Club.

Chasing Kenya’s total of 162 runs- the second highest by Kenya, Tanzania fell on 68 runs with 20 overs to spare.
Sarah Bhakita was the team’s top scorer with 39 runs from 56 balls but it was Maria Aimee’s unbeaten 37 that propelled Kenya to the total of 162 for the loss of eight wickets and gave Kenya an edge in the match that saw Sylvia Wairimu and Aliya Bauer make their debut.

Tanzania looked as if they will restrict Kenya to less than 100 runs as they had put Kenya to 50 runs in 20 overs but a fourth wicket stand of 73 runs between Bhakita and Aimee revived Kenya hopes.
The stand was broken when Bhakita was caught and bowled by Monica Pascal but Aimee took charge of the proceedings and carried Kenya all the way.

After Bhakita’s dismissal Emily Ruto added on 16 runs to put Kenya to 126 runs before her ride was stopped by Pacal who also had her caught and bowled.

Mary Belle and Mercyline Adhiambo failed to carry out with the momentum already set by the top order batters and fell in quick succession. The two fell to Pascal for four and two respectively but Aimee who’s currently enjoying a good show with the bat stayed put and saw Kenya bat through the allotted overs- the first time Kenya was doing that against Tanzania.
Belinda Maska added ten runs in a 22 runs stand with Aimee that got the scores before a poor running between the wickets saw her head back to the pavilion.

Earlier openers Pearlyne Omamo and Margaret Banja scored 12 and 14 runs respectively before they all fell to Khadija Nasibu in span of two overs.

Banja survived three drop catches before finally being caught by Esther Wallace in the 12th over.
Belle got Kenya first wicket in the third over when she trapped Asha Daudi for four with scores on 6. Prisca Leonard and Pascal added on 22 but only fell to a run out from Aimee. This came up after Ruto had misfielded and they opted for three runs but her quick decision to get the ball to the keeper’s end handed Kenya the second wicket.

The introduction of Banja for Belle didn’t yield any fruit and a decision by Ruto to pick the ball paid off.
Pascal defied all the odds and scored 15 but her dominance was cut short by Ruto when she had her caught by Bauer.
From here, Tanzania had no formula of stopping the Kenyans as they continued to loss wickets at regular intervals with Adhiambo and Omamo proving more and more mean with their bowling as they denied their opponents any chances of scoring. As Adhiambo was containing the batsmen, Omamo was getting wickets with ease.

Adhiambo conceded three runs from five overs with one wicket and four maidens while Omamo bagged three wickets for 14 runs in five overs.

Mwanaidi Ibrahim defiance with 21 runs was not enough to save her team as she only had two wickets to play with as Bhakita had last man Esther Wales stumped by Aimee for naught. Maska was economical conceding three runs in four overs.

Kenya plays Uganda on Thursday at the same venue.
